About the Project
BNRG Ballymahon is a 94MW solar farm in the townlands of Cartronbrack, Tirlickeen, Clogh, Corryena, and Lismacmurrogh, County Longford.
This new solar farm will consist of a low-density installation of PV panels.

Extensive environmental, landscape and archaeological measures will ensure the local land is protected.

Location
The solar farm sits across 5 nearby sites and will be connected via underground cabling:
-
The proposed solar farm spans five parcels of land near Ballymahon, Co. Longford.

-
Parcel 1 is in Cartronbrack, just north of the main site, beside the L5527 road. It sits in a quiet rural area with minimal visual impact.
-
Parcels 2–5 are grouped together in the townlands of Clogh, Corryena, and Lismacmurrog and Tirlickeen, near the R397 and local minor roads. These parcels are well-screened by natural hedgerows and surrounded by farmland, making the site well suited to solar development.

About the Project
BNRG Ballymahon is committed to providing clean, green energy while protecting the local environment and wildlife.
Excellent location for solar
Specially selected for its suitability for solar development, BNRG Ballymahon sits on rural, low-lying land with good proximity to the national grid.

Careful screening to preserve the landscape
The local topography, combined with hedgerows, buffer zones, solar panel set-backs from public roads and new planting and fencing, will help screen the low-lying solar array panels. Surrounding fields will also act as visual screening. Read more about this here

Environmental and wildlife conservation
Industry-leading ecological and biodiversity conservation is at the core of our development. By bringing together best-in-class experts, we can ensure BNRG Ballymahon meets the highest standards in environmental preservation. Read more about our conservation activities here

Protecting cultural heritage
Ballymahon is an area of historical interest for its Georgian Architecture and waterways, such as the Royal Canal Greenway. Assessments will be conducted to make sure we protect the local heritage.

Agricultural practice
Once operational, the land underneath the solar panels can continue to be used for sheep grazing and other medium-sized livestock. This is a common practice across solar farms, helping to manage grassland and supporting local agricultural use.
Connecting to the national grid
The solar farm will connect to the national grid by linking into an existing electricity line within the project boundary. This type of connection is called a "loop-in" and the power flows through the existing line on to the power network.

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be housed on-site to ensure a reliable solar energy supply, and meet the highest of international safety standards. Subject to a separate planning application, an Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) substation will be constructed.

A minimal impact and quick build
This will be a quick build project, expected to take under 12 months.

Planning application
Public consultation
BNRG Ballymahon hosted a public consultation on the 16th of July 2025 to hear local community views and answer any queries.

Planning Application
A planning application has been submitted to Longford County Council for a solar array, BESS and associated cabling on the 14th of November. A link to the application will be published on this website once Longford County Council have uploaded all the files. The Online Reference Number for the application is: 120000078162. The review period for the County Council is 8 weeks.

Build
Depending on the outcome of the planning application and procurement, construction on BNRG Ballymahon is likely to take place during 2027. Following the approximate 12-month construction period, the solar development is then expected to become operational in 2028.

Operational
Following the approximate 12-month construction period, BNRG Ballymahon is expected to become operational in 2028.

At the end of the lifecycle of BNRG Ballymahon, the solar panels and their supports will be dismantled and recycled.
